A savior sibling, also called savior baby, is a child that has been created by selective In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to be genetically compatible with an older sibling that is affected with a fatal disease.
The goal of savior siblings is to use stem cells from cord blood to perform a transplant that will save the sick brother or sister without risk of rejection. Diseases that can be treated using this method are those that affect blood cells, such as severe forms of anemia or leucemia.
