The mucus plug is a dense, gelatinous substance that begins to form around the 7th week of pregnancy. It seals the entrance to the uterus and provides protection for the fetus against infections.
When the mucus plug is expelled, it is time to go to the hospital because labor is approaching. However, if the discharge of the mucus plug is not accompanied by water breaking or regular, strong contractions, it is possible that the woman is not yet in labor.
