Advanced sperm selection techniques

In a classic ICSI, the embryologist chooses the best sperm by looking solely at how it moves and its physical appearance under the microscope.

However, reproductive medicine has evolved to offer much more precise diagnoses. Today, there are various procedures that allow evaluating other sperm characteristics:

  • HA-ICSI (Hyaluronic Acid Selection): this method is key to specifically capturing those sperm that have already completed their maturation process.
  • MACS: it works like a magnetic filter that automatically discards damaged (apoptotic) sperm and isolates only those that are completely healthy.
  • Microfluidic Chips (MFSS): sperm pass through microscopic channels that simulate female fluids, ensuring that only the strongest reach the end.
  • Zeta Potential: it is in charge of measuring the electrical charge on the surface of the sperm cell, a determining factor in evaluating its quality.
