Week 2 of pregnancy corresponds to the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. In this phase there is an increase in FSH concentration, which stimulates the growth of the ovarian follicles. This growth in turn causes an increased release of estradiol, inhibiting FSH.
At this point, the most advanced ovarian follicle is able to respond (Graff's follicle) and releases the egg from within. The remaining ovarian follicles that started to develop now degenerate.
