An abortion is defined as the interruption of a pregnancy, and therefore the loss of a developing embryo. Depending on the causes, we can distinguish between abortion (if it's induced) or miscarriage (if it occurs naturally).
An abortion is induced voluntarily by the woman, either because it was an unwanted pregnancy or because it was recommended by her doctor (i.e. therapeutic abortion).
