Urinary tract infections are frequent during pregnancy, since there are certain changes in the urinary tract during gestation that may favor their development. Among these factors are:
- Dilatation of the ureters.
- Pressure on ureters and bladder.
- Decreased muscle tone in the ureters.
- Increased vesico-ureteral reflux.
- Increased bladder volume.
- Increased urine pH.
These urinary tract infections in pregnancy can be asymptomatic bacteriuria, cystitis and acute pyelonephritis. In any case, appropriate antibiotic treatment should be given to avoid complications.
