The first ultrasound scan of the pregnancy is usually performed when the woman is approximately 3 months pregnant. In this ultrasound it will be possible to observe the number of gestational sacs to confirm whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy. In addition, the pregnant woman will be able to hear the heartbeat of the foetus.
Another reason for ultrasound in the third month of pregnancy is to measure the nuchal translucency.
