Spermatozoa are found inside the testes protected by the blood-testicular barrier. If this barrier is damaged, antisperm antibodies can reach the spermatozoa because they recognize the antigens found on its surface.
Some of the factors causing the breakdown of the hematotesticular barrier may be:
- Seminal infections.
- Varicocele.
- Testicular torsion.
- Vasectomy reversal.
In addition, antisperm antibodies can also appear in women, although their incidence is lower than in the male population.
