Spermatozoa need to have progressive motility to reach their ultimate goal: fertilizing the egg cell. During their journey toward the Fallopian tubes, where the egg is located, they must overcome a series of barriers and swim rapidly toward the oocyte, as only the fastest will be able to fertilize it.
