When the union of the egg and sperm occurs and, therefore, fertilization, the zygote is formed. Once the first mitotic division of the zygote takes place, the embryo is formed. From this moment on, the embryo will divide successively. Thus, an embryo on day 2 of development would have 4 cells; while on day 3 of development it would have 8 symmetrical cells.
