The adverse effects of tobacco on the baby do not end with delivery, but persist if the mother continues to smoke during breastfeeding. Nicotine, as well as other components of tobacco, can be passed to the baby through breast milk.
The following are some of the possible risks of smoking during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding:
- Colic.
- Difficulty breastfeeding.
- Palpitations and nervousness.
- Shorter sleep periods.
- Shorter duration of breastfeeding.
- Taking all this into account, women are advised to avoid resuming smoking once they have given birth.
