An episiotomy is a gynecological procedure in which a cut is made between the vulva and the anus. The episiotomy helps to widen the vaginal opening and facilitate childbirth. For this reason, this technique is recommended when babies are large or in cases of breech delivery.
Other indications for an episiotomy include deliveries using forceps or vacuum extraction, fetal distress, a very narrow vagina with risk of tearing, and similar situations.
