A part of family planning is knowing the existing contraceptive methods to avoid unwanted pregnancies. There are different types of contraceptives that can be classified as:
- Natural methods: consist of identifying the time of ovulation and the most fertile days.
- Barrier methods: prevent the union of the egg and sperm, and also protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). An example is the condom.
- Hormonal methods: for example, birth control pills or implants.
- Permanent methods: these are surgical interventions that offer permanent contraception. In women, this refers to tubal ligation; in men, permanent contraception is achieved through vasectomy.
