The terms infertility and sterility are often used as synonyms, although they are not.

In any case, the difference between primary and secondary infertility or sterility lies in whether or not a pregnancy has already been achieved.

If the couple has not achieved a positive pregnancy test or the pregnancy has not been carried to term, we are talking about female infertility.
