For couples who are considering gestational carrier, the following questions may be helpful to ask the clinic:
How long has the program been in operation?
Does the program maintain a referral listing of previous client couples?
Does the program recruit its own surrogates? and how?
Will they work with a surrogate recruited by the couple themselves?
    How are surrogates expenses handled?
Is there a cap on these expenses?
Does the program offer medical screening of the surrogate? To what extent?
    Who does the screening?
Does medical screening include an AIDS test of surrogate and her partner?
What are the costs of surrogacy (gestational or donor)?
What is the fee payment structure?
What are the financial obligations incurred by the couple?
How long are the surrogate’s medical records kept?
Does the program offer psychological screening and counseling to all parties? To what extent?
Does the program offer on-site medical services (insemination or IVF) or do they work with local physicians and hospitals?
How many babies have been born through the agency/clinic’s surrogacy programs?
To what extent is contact between the surrogate and the couple encouraged? (By letter, meeting face-to-face, on-going?)
Can the couple be present at the birth?
What type of legal counsel is offered to the surrogate and the couple?
Does this include the drawing up of contracts?
Does the program offer adoption finalization services?
What are the fees for informational meetings or interviews?
What are the financial obligations incurred by the couple? What is the payment schedule?
If the surrogate does not get pregnant over a certain number of cycles, what is the clinic’s policy regarding refund of fees paid?
In the event that the contract is not honored, what are the financial obligations for the couple?
In the event that the surrogate has a pregnancy loss, what are the financial obligations for the couple?
Does the program have a registry for the surrogate and children to exchange information when the child reaches maturity?

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this!
Judging from what they offer in the clinic we’ve recently been with, I’d also mention the following. Your surrogacy clinic will be the medical professional guiding you through all of the steps of the surrogacy medical process, including:
Early medical screening: In every surrogacy process, a surrogate must undergo a thorough medical screening to make sure that she is physically prepared for the process of surrogacy. This can include blood tests, saline sonograms and more. It’s likely that intended parents have already undergone medical testing to create embryos if they’ve worked with this surrogacy clinic for infertility treatments but, if they haven’t yet, they will also need to undergo certain tests to make sure they can create a healthy embryo with their eggs and sperm. Some surrogacy clinics will even offer psychological testing during this time, as well.
Gamete retrieval and IVF process: After intended parents and surrogates are medically cleared for the surrogacy process, a surrogacy clinic will guide them through the in vitro fertilization process. This will include everything from preparing the intended mother for egg harvesting, syncing up her cycle with the surrogate’s for a successful IVF transfer and more.
Pregnancy testing: After an embryo has been transferred to the surrogate’s uterus, the surrogacy clinic will test her blood and hormone levels to confirm a pregnancy with a more in-depth process than at-home pregnancy tests can provide.

  3. That’s a nice one. Will definitely be sharing it (with due credit of course) with my other friends. It is hard to actually concentrate when talking to a clinic… you have so many questions and time runs out so fast. and you are trying to not to bother the staff. and yet you still manage to bombard them with emails.
great that my agency was patient enough 🙂
    xx

  4. At the very first appointment with our clinic we were met by our English speaking manager. The girl was very busy, since we were not the only one couple with her that day. She invited us to a separate room with comfy upholstered chairs. Answered all our questions – we had a lot. She explained the peculiarities of each package. She really took time explaining everything to us. And one of the first things she told us were the conditions preventing us from signing this or that contract with them or some other possible solutions. E.g using donor egg. It made us think they’d never put their patients at risk. Truly a good thing about the clinic!

  5. When consulting with a surrogacy clinic, the questions that need to be asked can seem endless. This provides a great chance to be as thorough as possible, though, especially when it comes to the details of how fertilization will take place, the surrogate’s background, and other financial twists and turns. A broad question to start could be how much will various parts of the process cost? Another good boundary to clarify would include how much the intended parents can and should be involved and present for the various appointments and checkups in the timeline of the baby’s development.

Even more specific questions range from how the surrogate will be compensated to what the medical screening will look for in the surrogate’s health history. The matching process is something that needs clarifying in terms of timeframe, age, etc. Another category to delve deeply into involves the legal parameters and availability of legal counsel to both surrogate and intended parents before, during, and after the baby is born.
