Ginemed Madrid Center is an assisted reproduction unit that is, albeit independent, integrated into the Hospital Virgen del Mar in building B of the enclosure. If you need information on how to get to the clinic, either by public transportation or by car, click here.
This private fertility center was inaugurated in 2020 and consists of two floors in the building, and also a small entrance with an elevator.
On the second floor are the consulting rooms; while on the third floor are the nurses' station, the laboratory, the operating room, and the recovery rooms.
Ginemed Madrid Center has a team of 11 professionals. The medical director of the center is Dr. Martínez Cañavate and the laboratory is directed by Ester López Bejarano.
Ginemed was founded in 1992 in Seville by Dr. Pascual Sánchez Martín and his brother Fernando Sánchez Martín. Today, Ginemed has several centers in Valencia, Madrid, Seville, Murcia, Huelva, Cadiz and Lisbon (Portugal).
On the other hand, Ginemed also has a foundation whose objective is research, training, and social action. Ginemed's lines of research are varied, although they are specialized in male factor infertility and cases of high complexity (implantation failures and repeat abortions).
However, the Ginemed Madrid Center does not have any exclusive publication, but the staff of the center has participated in different topics.
As mentioned, Ginemed Madrid Center has new and modern facilities in Madrid since 2020.
Below are details of all the areas of the center, with their resources and technologies available for carrying out assisted reproduction treatments.
Ginemed Madrid Center is located in building B of the Hospital Virgen del Mar. The entrance to the hospital and the entrance to the Ginemed center are accessible to people with reduced mobility, as it has no steps and the doors are wide enough to allow wheelchairs to enter.
Specifically, the Ginemed Assisted Reproduction Unit is at the end of a long corridor, leaving the external consultations of the hospital at the beginning. This path is lovely made up of several trees and a green area.
The reception of the Ginemed Madrid Center is just outside the elevator on the second floor of the building with a black counter and a lamp. Two persons are employed here, with one employee for each shift. The reception staff provides patient care in two languages: Spanish and English.
To the left of the reception desk is the waiting room with 5 pictures on the walls related to the assisted reproduction laboratory. This is a single waiting room, but separated in two by a screen for greater privacy.
Each of these small areas contains two gray chairs and a couch. In total, the waiting room has 8 armchairs, two sofas, and three black ceramic lamps placed on three small tables. In addition, there are two televisions and WIFI to make the wait more enjoyable, although the estimated time in the room is approximately 10-15 minutes.
In the corridor that goes into the center and the consultation area, there are two gray armchairs separated by a table with a black ceramic lamp, the same as those in the waiting area.
Ginemed Madrid Center has 4 doctor's offices, all of them with an examination room, an ultrasound machine, and a gynecological table. The consultation rooms have their own bathroom with sink and lavatories, but there is also a sink in the examination area.
Ginemed Madrid Center has exclusively state-of-the-art ultrasound machines from General Electric Voluson and Samsung. Also in front o the gynecological table in the examination rooms, there is a screen hanging on the wall so that patients are able to check their ultrasound examination.
Ginemed Madrid Center employs 4 gynecologists who speak Spanish and English. All of them are on duty on weekends and holidays if it is necessary to perform a fertility treatment procedure such as an ovarian puncture or embryo transfer.
The operating room of the Ginemed Madrid Center is large and is approximately 20 m2. This surgical area is fully equipped with an operating table, instrument tables, a screen, an ultrasound machine, a defibrillator, a Fabius Plus anesthesia administration system, a trolley, an aspiration trolley, and an air purification line.
The operating room is directly connected by a door to the IVF laboratory. Additionally, there is a small window that communicates with the cleanroom that has an autoclave so that waste can be disposed of properly.
On the other hand, all the corners of the wall like the floor skirting boards in the operating room area are not straight but are rounded to prevent dirt from accumulating. Besides, the material of the laboratory and operating room walls is made up of a special PVC for clean rooms. Thanks to all these measures it is possible to maintain a clean and sterile environment in the operating room.
As regards the personnel involved in the interventions in the operating room, those are the gynecologist, the nurse, the anesthesiologist and, if necessary, the embryologist.
Ginemed Madrid Center has three separate laboratory areas: the andrology laboratory, the IVF laboratory and the cryopreservation laboratory. However, all this is distributed in a single space of 29.62 m2 approximately.
The main characteristic of all Ginemed laboratories is that they are glazed, so it is possible for patients to observe the activity inside from the corridor.
The changing rooms and the sterilization area are separated from the laboratory area to avoid possible contamination, although the administrative part of the laboratory is normally done inside.
Each of the laboratories is detailed below.
The andrology section consists of a small area where procedures related to the semen sample are performed: semen analysis, sperm training, sperm selection, etc.
The material available in the andrology area is a biosafety laminar flow hood II, an inverted microscope, a stove, a centrifuge, and a refrigerator. Therefore, Ginemed Madrid Center has everything necessary to carry out the semen studies.
The safety and traceability system used is that of double check to avoid confusing samples between patients.
As we have already mentioned, the IVF laboratory is connected to the operating room by means of a door that opens through a numeric code.
The light of this laboratory is dim and the average temperature is about 22-26ºC. This laboratory also has a ventilation system with positive pressure and HEPA filters with 15 renewals per hour. All these characteristics are ideal for the development of the embryos.
To access the IVF laboratory there is a double door. The first door is opened by means of a numerical code; while the second door is opened manually. Between both doors is the area where the staff changes their shoes to avoid contamination and not to alter the sterile environment of the laboratory area.
The IVF laboratory is equipped with the necessary material to perform the assisted reproduction treatments available at Ginemed Madrid Center. Specifically, this laboratory has the following equipment:
As in the operating room, the corners of the wall and the floor bases are rounded to prevent the accumulation of dirt and maintain sterile conditions. In addition, the walls are coated with special PVC for clean rooms, which also facilitates cleaning.
In relation to the method of biopsy of embryos to perform the PGD, Ginemed Madrid Center uses its own laser that rotates through all the centers as needed. All the laboratory staff is trained in its use.
Just like in the andrology unit, the security system is a double-check system in order to avoid confusion between the different patient samples.
This part of the laboratory is where the vitrification and devitrification of embryos and oocytes takes place. In the cryopreservation area there are liquid nitrogen tanks to keep the embryos, oocytes, and cryopreserved semen separate.
The method used for the freezing of embryos and eggs is vitrification.
Ginemed Madrid Center has three individual recovery rooms located in the same corridor as the door to the operating room. Patients who have undergone some surgical intervention, such as follicular puncture, can recover comfortably in these rooms.
All three rooms have an articulated bed, a gray armchair, a television, and a private bathroom with a toilet and sink. Moreover, the rooms have a mirror on the wall and a little white table with a telephone and a nurse's assistance button.
This room is located at the beginning of the corridor on the second floor of the center building.
The resources available in the semen collection room are an armchair, a sink, and a TV.
This is where the blood draw takes place. The material available for this is an armchair with armrests, a refrigerator, and a storage area.
Once the blood sample has been obtained, the analysis of it is carried out in the center's laboratory. Therefore, the nursing area does not have a centrifuge.
The first consultation for patients of Ginemed Madrid Center is free and informative, so no diagnostic tests are performed. Usually, this visit lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes and involves the participation of the doctor and the reception staff
Patients contact the unit and must fill out a health form. In addition, they send all the tests they have previously performed. Before the patient attends a consultation, the doctor is in charge of evaluating each situation; so that when the patient comes for a first visit, the doctor already knows all the relevant information. In this way, a closer patient approach is given and focuses on each particular case.
There are not any tests included in this first visit. The vaginal ultrasound is performed at the appointment where the results are gathered.
Ginemed Madrid Center does not have a specific schedule for first visits but can be from 8.00 to 21.00 from Monday to Friday, ie at any time within the hours of the center.
On the other hand, this unit offers the possibility of making the first visit by videoconference free of charge as well, both for national and international patients.
Once the first visit has been made, the doctor will indicate the patients if it is necessary to repeat or perform any additional diagnostic test and the guidelines are given to start the most appropriate treatment.
Last but not least, Ginemed Madrid center has treatment financing programs to help its patients with payment. Therefore, it is possible to make fractional payments for each technique.
The fertility treatments that can be performed in Ginemed Madrid Center are specified in the following table:

The patients of Ginemed Madrid Center have other medical services at their disposal that can be of significant importance in achieving pregnancy, in cases where the intervention of a gynecologist is not sufficient. Below is a list of the different specialties available:
All these services are not included in the cost of the treatment, which means an extra cost for the patient who requests them.
Currently, Ginemed Madrid Center offers a fertility preservation campaign where the determination of the antimullerian hormone and the antral follicle count is performed completely free of charge. In addition, this program also includes a consultation with the gynecologist.
The Spanish Fertility Society (SEF) is in charge of compiling the results of all the Spanish assisted reproduction clinics every year and making a statistical analysis. In fact, the SEF is the only scientific and independent organization of the clinics that collects and publishes these data in an objective manner.
However, the last report published by the SEF shows the success rates obtained in 2017 (National Registry of Activity 2017-SEF Registry). Therefore, the rates of Ginemed Madrid Center are not yet available, since they began their activity this year, in 2020.
We have not found any opinions of patients who have undergone fertility treatment at Ginemed Madrid Center, because it is a newly opened clinic and has been in operation for a short time.
