HELLP syndrome is considered a variant of pre-eclampsia, an obstetric disorder characterised by high blood pressure in the pregnant woman. This can lead to complications for both the pregnant woman and her unborn child.

Apart from high blood pressure, other symptoms associated with pre-eclampsia include headaches, fatigue, nausea, nosebleeds and blurred vision.
