Tests for hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is the increase of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) in the body due to different causes. Therefore, the fundamental test to detect hyperthyroidism is a blood test.

In addition, an iodine uptake test can be performed to identify the cause of hyperthyroidism. Thus, if radioactive iodine accumulates in the thyroid, it is possible that the cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease or the presence of nodules. In this case, an ultrasound can be performed.

On the other hand, if radioactive iodine does not accumulate in the thyroid, then the cause of hyperthyroidism would probably be thyroid inflammation.
