When patients undergo in vitro fertilisation (IVF), they may obtain many embryos. In these cases, there are different options with the leftover embryos, i.e. those that are not transferred:
- Vitrify them for use in future embryo transfers, i.e. own use.
- Donate them to other patients voluntarily and altruistically.
- To cede the surplus embryos to research.
- To cease the conservation of the embryos.
