The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle is characterized by the presence of the corpus luteum, which gives it its name. This is a structure that forms in the ovary from the remains of the empty follicle after ovulation and produces estrogens and, mainly, progesterone.
This phase lasts from ovulation until menstruation (if pregnancy does not occur), since the onset of bleeding is the beginning of a new menstrual cycle.
