Necrozoospermia is a seminal alteration that consists of a high number of dead spermatozoa in the ejaculate. However, when there are a large number of immotile spermatozoa in a semen sample, it does not mean that all of them are dead. Therefore, a vitality test should be performed to distinguish live immotile spermatozoa from dead spermatozoa.
Possible causes of necrozoospermia include poor diet, alcohol and drug consumption, cancer treatments, genitourinary infections, hormonal disorders and long periods of sexual abstinence. In addition, stressful situations and feverish periods can also alter sperm vitality.
