When the placenta detaches, it cannot reattach to the wall of the uterus. For this reason, it will be necessary to assess the best option depending on the stage of pregnancy at which the pregnant woman is.
If placental abruption occurs towards the end of pregnancy, i.e. close to the due date, the best option is to induce labour. If it is a mild placental abruption, a natural delivery may be attempted. If it is a total placental abruption, a caesarean section is recommended.
Sometimes, when placental abruption occurs very early in pregnancy and the bleeding stops, it is best to rest. However, if the bleeding does not stop, the fetal heartbeat increases or any other complications arise, the woman will be hospitalised and may even need a blood transfusion if there is a lot of blood loss.
