Are there risk factors for preeclampsia in pregnancy?

The exact cause of preeclampsia during pregnancy is unknown, but there are certain risk factors for the condition.

For example, women who become pregnant for the first time are at increased risk for preeclampsia. Similarly, women with previous pathologies such as diabetes, women with obesity or women with kidney failure are also more likely to develop preeclampsia in pregnancy.

Multiple pregnancy also poses a higher risk for preeclampsia, as well as having had preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy.
