Main characteristics of premature infants

When a delivery occurs before 37 weeks gestation, it is known as preterm labor and, therefore, the baby will also be premature. The more premature the baby is, the more immature the baby will be and the greater the risks to the baby.

Most premature babies are born with a larger than normal head size and their skin is thin and shiny. In addition, the palms of the hands and soles of the feet are reddened.

It is also common for premature babies to be born with lanugo, although they later lose it. The temperature of premature babies is quite low and, therefore, they usually spend a few days in the incubator.

The cry of these babies is weak and there is a high probability that they suffer from respiratory problems, among others.
