Female sex hormones

The formation of female sex hormones occurs in the ovarian follicles, which means that it varies depending on the cycle day.

Particularly, the formation of estrogens takes place in two different processes that are regulated by hypophyseal hormones:

  • LH triggers the production of androgens from cholesterol in the ovarian Theca cells.
  • Then, FSH causes androgens to become estrogens in the granulosa cells.
