The Spanish Fertility Society (SEF) was founded in 1953, although it was not until 1978 that it received this name. It was founded by José Botella Llusiá under the name of Sociedad Española para el Estudio de la Esterilidad (Spanish Society for the Study of Sterility) and became affiliated to the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS).
In 1990 the Registry of Assisted Reproduction Techniques was created and the SEF became part of the National Permanent Commission of Assisted Human Reproduction 7 years later (1997).
