The acrosome reaction is a process that takes place in the sperm through which a series of enzymes are released. These enzymes weaken the pellucid layer of the egg. The sperm is then able to cross the membrane of the oocyte to reach and fertilize it.
The nuclei of the sperm and the egg fuse to form the zygote.
