What is superfertilization?
Superfertilization consists of the fertilization of more than one ovum in the same menstrual cycle of the woman, although not in the same sexual relationship. In addition, it is not necessary that all the eggs are fertilized by sperm from the same man, but they can be sexual acts with different partners.
Therefore, superfecundation can be:
- Heteropaternal
- fertilization of two or more ovules with sperm from different fathers.
- Homopaternal
- fertilization of two ovules with the sperm of the same man. In this case, the babies may be fraternal twins.
In any case, superfertilization is not a common process in people. There is a low percentage of superfertilization if there have been separate sexual acts or pregnancy through artificial insemination (AI).
