Most commonly, prostatitis or inflammation of the prostate is caused by a bacterial infection. Therefore, treatment of prostatitis usually consists of oral or intravenous antibiotics for 2-3 weeks. The patient will begin to notice an improvement two to three days after starting antibiotics.
In addition to stopping bacterial growth with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers may also be prescribed to alleviate the discomfort caused by prostate inflammation.
