A semen sample is classified as teratozoospermic when it contains a high percentage of spermatozoa with abnormal morphology. Depending on the amount of amorphous sperm in the ejaculate, the teratozoospermia will be classified as mild or moderate.
Patients with moderate teratozoospermia will have difficulty achieving a pregnancy naturally, and even more so if they have other altered semen parameters as well. In these cases, the best reproductive option would be in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The same would be true if the man had a mild teratozoospermia, but his partner was older than 35 and/or did not have altered fallopian tubes.
