Prolapsed umbilical cord

When the umbilical cord is prolapsed, it means that the umbilical cord has come out of the birth canal before the baby. This situation can pose a great risk, as the baby's head may compress the umbilical cord as it emerges. This can compromise the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the baby.

If this happens, the baby may have a slower heart rate and serious complications such as brain damage or even death. Therefore, an emergency caesarean section is most commonly performed.
