The umbilical cord is usually between 50 and 65 centimetres long, although its length varies greatly. Therefore, the umbilical cord is called short when it is less than 35 centimetres long.
When the umbilical cord is short, the baby's development may be affected. It may also be related to certain foetal malformations and complications such as placental abruption.
