The lower urinary tract refers to the bladder, prostate and urethra. Localised infections are usually caused by E. coli bacteria. These infections are not sexually transmitted, as the male does not transmit the bacteria to the female through sexual intercourse and vice versa. However, intercourse can promote lower urinary tract infections.
The most common lower urinary tract infections include cystitis, urethritis and prostatitis.
