When a woman learns that she is pregnant from a pregnancy test, the next step is ultrasound confirmation of the pregnancy. This ultrasound takes place in the 6th-8th week of pregnancy and the specialist will check for a heartbeat and determine the gestational age of the embryo.
If an embryo sac is seen ultrasonographically but no embryo is seen, then it would be an anembryonic pregnancy. Similarly, if no gestational sac is seen, then it would be an ectopic or extrauterine pregnancy.
