There are different procedures to perform artificial insemination (AI), although the most common way is intrauterine, i.e. by depositing the capacitated semen sample in the uterus.
Other insemination options are listed below:
- Intravaginal Insemination (IVI)
- sperm is deposited at the bottom of the vagina, just as during sexual intercourse.
- Intracervical Insemination (ICI)
- this type of insemination is carried out by introducing the semen into the cervix, which increases the sperm's journey to meet the egg.
- Intratubal Insemination (ITI)
- the semen sample is placed in the fallopian tubes, but has not been shown to increase the success rate of treatment.
Finally, another much less common option is Intrafollicular Insemination (IFI). In this case, the specialist introduces the sperm into an ovarian follicle. However, this type of AI is practically out of use.
