During the lactation period, the woman does not have a menstrual period or ovulation. This is because during this period, prolactin levels are quite high and cause a blockage of the secretion of other hormones.
As a consequence of this hormonal blockage, the follicles are not able to grow and, therefore, ovulation or egg release does not occur. This is why breastfeeding is considered a natural contraceptive.
