Regardless of whether the contraceptive implant has a lifespan of three to five years, the patient is free to decide when she wants to have it removed.
To perform the removal, the specialist palpates the arm to locate the device and presses on one end, causing the opposite end to rise under the skin. Next, local anesthesia is applied to numb the area, and a very small incision is made through which the device is painlessly removed.
