Sometimes, but not in all cases, the gynaecologist decides to prescribe contraceptives to the patient before starting IVF. Although it may seem contradictory, the main reasons why the specialist may recommend the woman to take the contraceptive pill before the IVF cycle are:
- To regulate the onset of menstruation if the woman has irregular menstrual cycles.
- Inhibit ovarian function, so that the ovaries are at rest before starting ovarian stimulation.
- Facilitate cycle scheduling if more planning is required.
Therefore, the specialist will assess whether taking contraceptives is appropriate for the woman's particular situation.
