Diabetes is a metabolic disease caused by insufficient or no insulin production by the pancreas. In the case of type 1 diabetes, the cells of the patient's immune system destroy the cells responsible for insulin production. Therefore, these patients require insulin-based treatment.
In contrast, patients with type II diabetes do produce insulin, although less than they should or do not use it correctly. In either case, there is a build-up of glucose in the bloodstream.
