The Y chromosome has a region called AZF which contains genes involved in spermatogenesis, i.e. the production of spermatozoa. When there are microdeletions (loss of small fragments) in this AZF region, these genes can lose their function and thus affect sperm production.
Microdeletions of the Y chromosome are the second genetic cause (after Klinefelter's Syndrome) of infertility in males.
