The theory of lymphatic or vascular spread has been proposed as a possible cause of endometriosis. According to this theory, endometrial cells could travel through the vascular or lymphatic system and thus reach distant locations.
While this theory would explain the occurrence of endometriosis, for example, in the lung, it does not in itself explain how these cells manage to adhere and give rise to endometriotic implantation in these areas.
