The theory of coelomic metaplasia is one of the theories that has been proposed to explain the causes of endometriosis. According to this theory, a peritoneal cell could transform into an endometrial cell in response to a stimulus that could be hormonal, environmental or in response to inflammatory processes.
This theory could explain the cases of endometriosis in men or in women who are not yet menstruating.
