The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown. However, there are different theories about its causes. One of these theories is that of retrograde menstruation, according to which a retrograde flow would allow the endometrial cells to reach the abdominal cavity.
However, it seems that there are other important factors for the development of endometriosis, such as immunological alterations and genetic and environmental influences.
