The aim of existing treatments for essential thrombocythemia is to control and regulate the levels of platelets in the blood. For this purpose, there are several drugs that reduce platelets, such as hydroxyurea, Agrylin, interferons and aspirin.
In addition to pharmacological treatments for essential thrombocythemia, plateletpheresis can be used in emergency situations. This is a procedure in which excess platelets are removed and the remaining blood components (plasma and red blood cells) are returned to the patient.
