Egg donation, ovum donation or egg cell donation is the process by which a woman donates her egg cells voluntarily and altruistically so that a recipient can use them to get pregnant via IVF (in vitro fertilization).
In order to choose the most appropriate donor, donors must be pre-screened thoroughly, regardless of whether they are known (for instance, a friend, sister or any other family member) or anonymous (i.e. chosen by the fertility clinic or egg donor agency).
