What is hypomenorrhea?
Hypomenorrhea is a decrease in the amount and/or duration of menstrual flow. This term is the inverse of hypermenorrhea or menorrhagia.
The causes of hypomenorrhea can be several, from an alteration in ovarian function to a hormonal disorder in women. In addition, other reasons that can trigger a scarce menstruation can be:
- After a uterine curettage.
- Use an intrauterine device (IUD).
- Presence of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
- Asherman syndrome.
In addition, excess stress can also cause hypomenorrhea in women. However, when the woman relaxes and the stressors are gone, the menstrual cycle will return to normal.
