The mission of the immune system is to defend the body against harmful or foreign agents. These agents are known as antigens and can be bacteria, viruses, toxins, etc.
One of the most important cells for the immune system are lymphocytes, as they are responsible for recognising their own cells and producing antibodies against foreign antigens.
Although the function of the immune system is defence, it can sometimes fail and cause the cells themselves to shut down. This would trigger an autoimmune disease.
