As one can see in this picture, there are 3 basic steps that every IVF patient will go through:
- Controlled Ovarian Stimulation (COS), which is the step in which the woman receives medication to stimulate her ovaries for around 10 days. The goal is to promote the production of multiple eggs.
- Ovum pick-up, a surgical intervention whereby the eggs that have matured are retrieved from the ovary.
- Collection and processing of the semen sample. It will be used to fertilize the eggs in the lab for the creation of embryos.
At this point, it is important to point out that fertilization can be performed by conventional IVF or ICSI. However, the use of one fertilization technique or the other does not imply any change in the steps to be taken by the patient.
