The IUD should be inserted by a medical professional in the office without anesthesia. It is a quick and simple process.
First, the doctor will place a speculum to widen the vagina and insert ring forceps with the IUD through the cervix. At the end, the IUD is deposited at the bottom of the uterus and the applicator is removed.
Generally, this process resolves more painfully in women who have not previously gone through childbirth.
