Semen culture or sperm culture is an additional test that can provide information on the reproductive capacity of the male. This microbiological analysis of semen is performed when a quantity of more than 1 million leukocytes per mL of ejaculate is detected in the seminogram.
Other situations in which a semen culture is recommended is in males who present pain or inflammation in the testicles, as well as blood in the semen. In addition, changes in the color and odor of the ejaculate may also indicate the need for a sperm culture.
